When caring adults make family meals a routine, children feel a sense of belonging and security. To make your family meals screen-free, take turns talking about the events of the day, or tell jokes, or tell your child stories about what you did when you were little. When a caring adult uses a storybook to encourage conversations, children understand stories and daily language a little better. When children talk through their thinking, they are better able to order their thoughts. When they think out loud, a caring adult can help to shape their thinking and help the child to understand new words and ideas. Reading books together becomes an opportunity to explore new ideas and words. When a caring adult takes time to play, they help build a relationship, as well as important skills in attention and patience. Play follow the leader with as few as two people. Make the adult the leader to introduce this new game and then take turns being the leader. Explore large movements like running and jumping when you have the space, or small movements like blinking and sticking out your tongue when space is limited (ie. While waiting for your food at a restaurant.)
