Spruce Ridge School organized One School One Book during the month of January, 2022. We read the book School Days According To Humphrey by Betty G. Birney together as a school community. Students enjoyed a number of activities and contests throughout the month to encourage them to read and discuss the book with their families and classmates. Trivia questions were announced over the intercom each day and students enter their names to win prizes for answering the questions correctly.
Each Tuesday in January was “Eat Like Humphrey Day” where students were encouraged to eat healthy snacks that hamsters would eat, like carrots or apples, and every Friday was “Fuzzy Friday” where staff and students wore warm, fuzzy clothes (like a hamster!)
The highlight of the month was that the school actually purchased a live hamster. “Humphrey” the hamster spent one day in each classroom in the school (That’s 17 different classrooms!) Students were so excited to have Humphrey spend the day with them in their classroom. On the day Humphrey was in their classroom, students were asked to bring donations for Telemiracle. Over $600 in donations was collected!
Students were also asked to participate in a writing/drawing contest. They were to write from Humphrey’s perspective about what they saw and heard in their classroom, and draw a picture to go along with the writing. Winners from each classroom received an adorable hamster keychain.
At the final Celebration on January 28, students watched a fun video of Humphrey exploring their school and did the “Hamster Dance”. One lucky student’s name was drawn to take Humphrey the hamster home to live with her forever.
It was an awesome event that helped make school fun during the long, dark, cold month of January!
