Girls Who Game

Girls Who Game

The Girls Who Game program provided opportunities to young girls, as well as educators to learn about coding, gaming, and the use of Minecraft as a learning tool. Carlyle Elementary School and Pangman School participated with Dell Canada for a second year of the program in the 2019-2020 school year. The goal of the program is to increase student engagement in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) and increase the understanding of what a career in these areas would look like in the future.

The Class was led by Beth Kelloway a teacher at Carlyle Elementary, and Wendy Johnson a teacher at Pangman School. They both co-constructed areas of interest to explore while the divisions Instructional Technology team, Dell, and Microsoft provided training to build capacity for the students and teachers.

"As a teacher I found out how little I knew and how much more I need to learn! I appreciated the opportunity to have the mentors join through TEAMS, and the girls enjoyed having women in the field work with them as well. Now a year later from when the program took place, the girls who participated in the program still love Minecraft and have been sharing what they learned with other students. It was really amazing to see how they started to collaborate outside of Girls Who Game as well! It is the girls who participated in this program that are always sparking other students on to work together towards a goal."  - Wendy Johnson, 4-6 Teacher at Pangman School
