Kindergarten to Grade 7

Students in grades kindergarten to 7 will take all 7 required areas of study: language arts, mathematics, science, social science, health education, arts education and physical education.

The learning platform for kindergarten to grade 7 is Microsoft Teams. MS Teams is free to all SECPSD students and available online or can be downloaded to a computer, tablet or smart phone. Students and teachers will hold regular online meetings in Teams and curriculum-based student learning activities will be designed by teachers and supported by parents/guardians in the home.

Kindergarten to grade 7 programs are synchronous which means that students will progress through their school material together, just as they would in a face-to-face classroom. The delivery method for student lessons will be a mix of live online meetings with their teacher, pre-recorded lessons, print materials and textbook lessons as well as other multi-media objects. The amount of daily screen time per student will vary depending on their age; younger students having less screen time than older students.

The amount of time spent in synchronous, online, instructional meetings each day will be at least 30 minutes and never more than 3 hours. Some meetings will involve the entire class, some may involve a small group of students, and some will involve individual students.

Ideally, students will regularly attend and participate in these daily meetings. When this attendance is not possible, parents should inform the online teacher so that accommodations, such as recording the meeting for later viewing, can be made.

Offline activities will be assigned. If a student does not have access to a printer arrangements can be made to have a monthly learning package mailed to them. Submission of student work may involve uploading files to Teams, emailing or texting pictures or scans of completed assignments, voice or video recordings. Any mandatory textbooks, workbooks or reading materials will be sent to the student. Older students may also be given codes to access e-texts or other electronic publications.

Cyber Stone Virtual School students will follow the South East Cornerstone School Division calendar and 6-day cycle. Report cards will be emailed to parents. Parent meetings and conferences will be done online using Teams or over the phone.

Grades 8 and 9

Students in grades 8 and 9 will take all 7 required areas of study: language arts, mathematics, science, social science, health education, arts education and physical education.

The learning platform for grades 8 and 9 is Blackboard Learn. Before beginning online courses, students will be required to complete a series of training modules based on the Blackboard environment, digital literacy, and building successful online learning practices.

Grade 8 and 9 programs are asynchronous, which means that students can progress through their courses at their own pace. All lessons and activities are available to the students via Blackboard. If needed, students will also be provided with print or electronic textbooks. There will be paper and pencil assignments at times so access to a printer and a scanner (cell phone with camera feature) is necessary.

At the start of the school year, parents, students, and teachers will conference online to determine an individualized learning plan for the student. The learning plan will outline which courses the student will take at one time. Students can choose to take their courses over two semesters, four blocks, or a combination. The students will have timelines for their courses but can choose to work at a faster pace if desired.

Just as in a face-to-face classroom, students work at different paces. If a student cannot complete assigned work during a one-hour period in a face-to-face classroom, they would finish the assignment for homework. The same is expected in an online class.

Cyber Stone Virtual School students will follow the South East Cornerstone School Division calendar and 6-day cycle. Report cards will be emailed to parents. Parent meetings and conferences will be done online using Teams or over the phone.
